Safety on MySpace

Jon Faine from ABC Radio spoke with Rod Nockles, Director of Safety and Security of MySpace on Tuesday 8 May. They began talking about how MySpace is trying to combat identity fraud The conversation then moved to children's access to MySpace and what parents should know about MySpace. Some very interesting points were raised.

It appears that the interview is not available to podcast directly from ABC radio but I have copied it to my podomatic account. You can listen to it at http://joanned.podomatic.com/

Hi Joanne,

It's very concerning. With the endless possibilities that technologies can provide along comes with it a string of possible dangers. Giving too much information about yourself on the net can be dangerous. Identity fraud is on the rise, particularly when criminals see just how easy it can be.

Joanne this is a great podcast - should be mandatory for all parents to listen to - it make me feel good that we are in a position to understand all of this technology and guide our children. I will be passing this on to others in my circle ... It was heartening to hear the statistics for youth suicide have been reduced -I am happy to accept that to some degree the use of these social software environments has helped. I think it is very important to educate everyone to guard our identities on-line at the moment. I saw a show on SBS last week about the new ways of preventing identity fraud - optical scans are used in Hong Kong for itinerant workers in one 6000 worker dormitory ... it's all very sci-fi (eg. Minority Report)

Joanne,
I listened with interest to this podcast as we have, since the suicides and an incident of identity theft, had MySpace banned from our school.
It is a difficult issue
Thanks,
